Spendassay vs. Zylo
Zylo manages the SaaS portfolio. Spendassay audits the AI slice of it.
Zylo is a SaaS management platform. Its job is the whole application estate: find every subscription a company is paying for, track licence assignment and utilisation, and put renewals on a calendar somebody owns. That is a broad, unglamorous discipline and a company with several hundred SaaS contracts needs it. Spendassay does something narrower. It takes the AI slice of the bill — seats, API tokens, AI infrastructure — and audits it against what engineering actually shipped, with a proof level and a visible formula on every dollar. If you already run a SaaS management platform, Spendassay is the depth on the line item it treats as one row.
The one-line difference
Zylo tells you which subscriptions you own and who has a licence; Spendassay tells you whether your AI spend bought anything.
Two jobs, often side by side
Use each for what it's built for
Reach for Zylo when…
Reach for Zylo when the problem is the whole SaaS portfolio — hundreds of applications, unowned renewals, licence sprawl across departments, and no single inventory of what the company subscribes to.
Reach for Spendassay when…
Reach for Spendassay when the AI line specifically is the question a CFO is asking, and a licence-assignment count is not an answer: you need AI seats and tokens tied to shipped engineering work, with each figure stating how it was measured.
Side by side
Built for different questions
| Dimension | Zylo | Spendassay |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Inventory, licence management and renewal governance across the whole SaaS estate. | Audit AI spend — seats, tokens, infrastructure — against what engineering shipped. |
| Scope | Broad: every application the company subscribes to, across every department. | Narrow and deep: the AI vendors, and the engineering output they were bought to produce. |
| What 'used' means | Licence assignment and application login activity, portfolio-wide. | Seat activity in the vendor's own console, plus token volume by team, plus the delivery signal the spend was meant to move. |
| Connects spend to shipped output | Not the job. A SaaS management platform measures the subscription, not the work it produced. | Yes — that is the job. AI dollars set against delivery, with the cost of going faster shown beside any speed claim. |
| Evidence on every number | Utilisation and spend reporting from the systems it connects. | Every dollar carries a proof level (Counted over Compared over Estimated) and exposes its formula. |
| Independence | A management platform for the portfolio you already own. | Buyer-side auditor. Issues no cards, resells no tools, takes no margin on your AI spend. |
| Pricing | Sales-led, in the SaaS management platform tradition: no public price, quoted on portfolio size. | Published and self-serve: a free Snapshot, then $16 per covered engineer per month (Observe) and $40 (Control). Priced per engineer, never as a percentage of your AI spend. |
Zylo is described from general public positioning and has not yet been source-verified against their own site — treat every specific in their column as a starting point and check it before relying on it. Everything in the Spendassay column is what the product does today, each number carrying its proof level.
Common questions
Spendassay and Zylo
- We already have a SaaS management platform. Do we need Spendassay?
- Only if the AI line has become big enough to argue about. A SaaS management platform is built to cover breadth: hundreds of applications, one row each. AI spend does not behave like a normal SaaS row — it has a metered half that headcount does not cap, and the question a CFO asks about it is not 'who has a licence' but 'what did it buy'. Spendassay answers that one, and it is designed to sit alongside a portfolio tool rather than replace it.
- Can Zylo find idle AI seats?
- A SaaS management platform can generally tell you a licence is assigned and not being logged into, which is genuinely useful. What it is not built to do is price the metered half of an AI bill, attribute token spend to a team, or connect either to engineering output. Those are the parts of AI cost that a per-application inventory does not have a column for.
- Does Spendassay manage our other SaaS?
- No, and it is not trying to. Spendassay covers AI vendors only. If the problem is that nobody knows how many subscriptions the company has, a SaaS management platform is the right tool and Spendassay is not a substitute for one.
